Basavanna, popularly known as Basaveshwara, was one of the most influential philosophers, social reformers, spiritual thinkers, and poets of 12th-century Karnataka. His teachings played a significant role in shaping the social, religious, literary, and cultural history of the region. His connection with Basavana Bagewadi makes Vijayapura district an important part of his life and legacy.Basavanna was born at Bagewadi, presently known as Basavana Bagewadi, in Vijayapura district. He lived during a period when society was influenced by rigid social divisions and religious customs. Basavanna questioned social discrimination and argued that every individual should be treated with dignity and respect regardless of birth or occupation.

One of the most important principles associated with Basavanna is Kayaka, which emphasizes the dignity of honest labour. He believed that every form of sincere work has value and that people should perform their occupations honestly. He also promoted Dasoha, the principle of sharing one’s resources, knowledge, and abilities for the benefit of society.Basavanna’s philosophy emphasized personal devotion, ethical conduct, equality, compassion, and social responsibility. He believed that genuine spirituality should be reflected in everyday life rather than being limited to rituals or external practices.He is also closely associated with Anubhava Mantapa, a forum for spiritual and philosophical discussion traditionally associated with Kalyana. The movement brought together saints, poets, thinkers, workers, and devotees from different social backgrounds. Women such as Akka Mahadevi also played an important role in the broader Sharana and Vachana tradition.Basavanna expressed his ideas through Vachanas, short Kannada poems written in an accessible and direct style.
